Nagasaki Chinatown

  • Nagasaki Chinatown 00:00

Because of the trade with China, there is a Chinatown in Nagasaki. Nagasaki Shinchi Chukagai is the oldest Chinese residential area in Japan that has existed since the 17th until the 19th century during the political isolation under the rule of Shogun Tokugawa. Chinatown is the main area for any Chinese activity.

Now, Nagasaki’s Chinatown is one of the popular tourist attractions in the town. The area consists of shops selling clothing, foods, and other trinkets. Even though, it is not as crowded as Singapore’s Chinatown, the Nagasaki Chinatown gives colour to this historic town.

I recorded this soundscape on the 9th of May 2019. There were high school students spending time after school here. They talked and laughed. Their voices filling the alleys of the Chinatown, and there was also Chinese music being played through speakers hung on the corners of the alleys. It seemed to be intensifying the Chinese vibe aside from the architecture and decorations.
