When I arrived in Kuala Lumpur, I coincidently had booked a stay in Lebuh Ampang Street. Without any prior knowledge, I actually booked a stay in the little India area. I usually book a stay through the internet. It was a fortunate coincidence because not far from my lodge was as group of spiritual people who called themselves Shirdi Sai Baba Society of Malaysia, which gave me an interesting soundscape experience. Shirdi Sai Baba is a spiritual figure in India that is considered as a figure they have to follow. Their teachings consisted of love, retribution, helping others, giving, the satisfaction and peace of mind, and loyalty towards god and teachers. They also teach people to not be attached to anything that are mortal. What is interesting is that Shirdi Sai Baba does not agree to any one teaching of religion. In their practice, they merge the belief of Hindu and Muslim.
This is the recording of Shirdi Sai Baba society’s activity at night. It was the fourth of March 2019. Many believer gather in a medium sized room. Together, they chanted along with the accompaniment of percussion from Chimta, which sounded like the tambourine, and the Tabla. A leader sings a phrase, which then is followed by the other believers. As the night gets deeper, the chants become more and more solemn. If you walked through the streets that night, you would be able to hear the chants from the side of the road.
